How to Make Money Blogging

If you’ve ever wondered how to make money blogging, you’ve come to the right place. As an 11-year veteran blogger, this is what I’ve learned. First, here’s my story in a nutshell…

How I went from hobby blogger to pro blogger

I blogged as a hobby. In 2010 I focused on generating income.
Since then, my husband traded a 9-to-5 job he hated for a part-time job he loves, together we homeschool our kiddos and my full-time online income makes up the bulk of our income.
It takes time, creativity and hustle—a lot of all three—but it’s absolutely doable.

The 5 Basic Steps

Here are the five basic steps if you want to make money blogging. I’ll discuss them in more detail as we go, with an emphasis on #5.
  1. Establish your home base
  2. Produce valuable content
  3. Build relationships
  4. Grow your platform (and branch out)
  5. Choose and implement streams of income
If you find yourself getting overwhelmed as you read through, you’re normal! Don’t worry, I’ll give you some tips for starting at the end. Also, please note this post contains affiliate links.
Alright, let’s break it down.

1. Establish your home base

If you want to make money blogging, obviously you’ll need a blog. If you don’t already have one, no worries, simply follow the steps I outlined in How to Start a Blog. This is the easy part (even if you’re not technically-inclined).

2. Produce valuable content

Once you have a blog, write. Draw from your expertise and experience and write informative posts and articles about your chosen topic. Make your content excellent. In order to make money, you must have visitors, but in order to have visitors, you must have content worthwhile to visit.
Writing and producing content is the time consuming part. It’ll be a while before you start seeing an income. There is no way around this. There are no shortcuts. We all have to put in our time.

3. Build relationships

While you create your content, start building genuine and sincere relationships via social media, commenting on other blogs, forums and the like. Reach out to people in your niche. Find people who could use the information you provide. Get to know them, interact, be friendly and helpful by offering no-strings-attached tidbits of your expertise. Building authentic relationships is important for a few reasons:
  • You will establish a reputation of being trustworthy and generous.
  • Your site will be found. People won’t naturally find your site if you don’t put yourself out there.
  • It’s very possible these relationships will turn into much more than just acquaintances to chat with online. These people will likely support you in the future and more than that, they may become fantastic, life-long friends.

4. Grow your platform (and branch out)

Keep growing in the knowledge of your craft so the content you produce gets increasingly great. Use your blog to get exposure, build authority, gain trust and be helpful. (Have I said that before? It’s just so important.)
A lot of people don’t realize that for many bloggers, much of the money they make does not come from their blog directly. A blog is a platform. It’s online property, a digital home. After proving their trustworthiness, bloggers use their blogs as springboards to launch other projects that bring in income, such as ebooks, books, speaking, products, etc.
Only think about making money once you have earned trust. Many, many people want to skip ahead to the money part, but if you try to dive into monetizing before you’ve really built your platform, you run the risk of damaging the good reputation you so desperately need.

5. Choose and implement streams of income

This is the part you’ve been waiting for—the actual ways people make money blogging.
Alright.
There are numerous ways bloggers make money. Each blogger has a different combination of income streams. There is no “right” way. And that’s the beauty of it. There are endless possibilities. You’re job is to find a combination that works for you.
Income streams ebb and flow, so successful bloggers are constantly exploring new ways to make money. The key to making good money as a blogger is to have multiple streams of income. Even small trickles of money coming from various sources over time can add up.
The best way to start monetizing is to let it happen organically out of what you are already doing. Hopefully you are blogging about something you enjoy. As you grow, monetize in ways that would most suit you and your audience.
Following is a list of income streams bloggers adopt, broken down into five main categories:
How to make money blogging: advertising
Unlike many of the other categories, advertising is all about generating income directly from your blog, website or other digital asset(s).

Display Ads

Display ads are graphics or images similar to billboards or ads in a magazine. Typically they are positioned on your site in the sidebar, header, footer or within your content. Sometimes they are referred to as banner ads.
Ads on your site are meant to complement your blog’s content, making them attractive and relevant to visitors. Advertisers hope that your visitors will then click on those images to explore and purchase the products or services they offer.
Display ads are often provided through ad networks. Ad networks are companies that connect advertisers with publishers (bloggers). Ad networks act as a middle man between advertisers and publishers, negotiating partnership details between the two. The ad network takes a cut from the partnership profit. Ad networks are attractive to many bloggers because they take the hassle out of display advertising.
Some ad networks, like Google Adsense, are relatively easy to get into and are easy to set up. Other ad networks, though, are selective in who they accept. Examples of ad networks are Google Adsense, BlogadsBlogHerBeacon Ads, Federated Media, Sovrn, (formerly Lijit), Media.net, Rivit and Sway. There are many more, so once you get involved in your niche’s community of bloggers, you’ll soon hear of others.

Can you really make money with Google AdSense?

This is a very popular question, and a good one. Google Adsense is probably the most popular ad network and a good place for beginning bloggers to start if they want to pursue display ads because it’s so easy to set up.
However, if you want to make really good money with Google AdSense, you either have to be in a unique niche in which advertisers will pay a lot of money for clicks on their ads (hard to find), or you have to have a lot of traffic (hard to get, especially for beginners).
For these reasons, I don’t recommend AdSense (or display advertising in general) as the main pursuit for new bloggers.
Tips:
  • To apply for Google AdSense or ad networks, contact the ad network via their website (linked above).
  • If you want to get an idea of pricing and traffic for popular blogs, sites like Beacon Ads and Federated Media are places you can do that.
  • If you’re using CPC/PPC ads (cost per click/pay per click), check out Google’s recommendations for best ad placement on your site. It’s important that your content doesn’t get drowned out by ads. Google has indicated sites with too many ads above the fold may be penalized in search. If you’re not sure what above the fold is on your site, use this tool.
  • As always, experiment. Experiment with ad placement to get the right combination on your site.

Private Ads

Private ads are similar to display ads in that they also come in the form of buttons or graphics and usually appear in the sidebars of blogs. They are unique in that there is no middle man (ad network) to negotiate the partnership. Partnerships are arranged directly between a blogger and an individual, small business or company.
Initial contact can be made by the blogger or by the advertiser. Be clear on what’s expected by both parties. Not sure what to charge? Look around to see what others in your niche charge. You can often find this information on a blog’s advertising page or media kit.
Don’t just throw up an advertising page and expect advertisers to come calling. Go to them. Not sure how to do that? Find other blogs like yours that are your size or slightly larger. See who is advertising on their site. Contact those companies and ask if they’d like to advertise on your site too. Create a pitch and make it a win-win. Check out iHeartOrganizing‘s advertising page as an example.

Tip for private ads on your blog: If you have ads in your sidebar, keep them full. Instead of displaying a blank box with “Advertise here” fill it with an affiliate graphic (see Affiliate Marketing below for more). Crystal Paine puts it well when she says, “[Blank ad spots] scream, ‘My advertising space isn’t valuable enough for people to want to buy so I instead have this big blank box!'”

Giveaways & Reviews

If you’ve read blogs for any length of time, you’ve surely seen a review or giveaway and maybe participated yourself. A company supplies a product to a blogger to be reviewed and/or given away to readers.
A word about giveaways…
I list giveaways here because some bloggers charge to run giveaways in addition to the expected free product to keep for themselves. There are varying opinions about whether or not one should be compensated for giveaways.
As I see it, it largely depends on whether the product is for marketing purposes or for advertising purposes. Companies use marketing to spread the word about their product or service.
With advertising, a company makes a deal with another party to help them spread the word. Companies expect to pay for advertising. For example, a company may market their product by handing out free t-shirts. Because you like the t-shirt, you take it and wear it. You obviously wouldn’t charge the company when you wore their t-shirt.
But I think a giveaway on a blog would often fall in the category of advertising. Yes, the company you’re working with may give you a product to use (indeed, they should!). However, they are also asking you to provide a service to them. After all, you are spending your valuable time fielding their emails, writing a post (or posts), following up with giveaway entrants, etc.
If there is nothing else you’re getting from the partnership except for the free product, this service should be compensated in my opinion.

Tips for reviews & giveaways:
  • Products you receive for free need to be reported as income on your taxes so keep excellent records and make sure the products you are accepting for review are really ones you want to pay taxes on later.
  • Don’t be afraid to negotiate. This is your blog. No need to just take what you’re offered on the first round. Make it a win-win for both.
  • If you don’t want to do a review for a company, ask the company if they’d like to buy ad space instead. Mention that they’ll still get a spot in front of your readers.

Newsletter/Podcast Sponsorships

If you have an email newsletter or podcast, you can accept advertising just as you would on your blog. You can reach out to potential advertisers, tell them how they would benefit from advertising with you and pitch your idea.

Sponsored Posts

Writing a sponsored post means you work with a company and write a post about their product or service. Be upfront and disclose your relationship to your readers.

Keep sponsored posts to a minimum so you don’t turn off readers. If you read blogs, you’ve probably seen sponsored posts. They can be spotted by the disclosure stating something like, “This post was sponsored by [company] but all opinions are mine.”

The minimum payout amount is $50 and they pay by Paypal.

So, as I said in the beginning, for every single penny you earn, you need to make in that extra effort and take out a little time dedicatedly from your daily schedule. If any website is promising you to earn thousands of dollars without doing anything, either it will be a scam or its revenue model will not be concrete enough to pay in the long run.

So, next time you look for some money making site online, consider any of these and even think of some reliable reasons they are paying you and you will get the most authentic ways out.

Write Today; Monetize Tomorrow! [Blogging Tips]

Blogging Tips
A recent blog post by Jim Connolly inspired me to write this blog post. In that blog post he mentioned about a best selling Kickstarter book written by the awesomest Seth Godin. When people said it took Seth 3 hours to write that book Seth said it took him around 8 years.
Yes!
That’s how long it took him, writing blog posts almost every day, to build a big enough community to reach his Kickstarter target in 3 hours.
You know what? It applies to blogging as well.
I’ve noticed a gazillion “How To Start A Blog In 5 Minutes” videos and tutorials. But the reality is that it doesn’t work that way. You know Why? They’re all basically about how to buy a domain name (i.e, your own .com address like minterest.com), web hosting plan (i.e, your own web server space where you can upload files), and install blogging software (WordPress or similar software).
Yes, that’s all you can do in 5 minutes and it’s so far away from a perfect blog as there are a lot of other things that you must know and should do.
And if you read somewhere that blogging is easy then that’s not really true. Blogging is simple but not easy. It takes time, patience, some money, and a lot of effort and learning to get going. Yes, it’s possible to create a new WordPress blog and publish your first article in less than 10 minutes but it will probably look like this and not like this.

Your First 365 Posts Are The Worst Blog Posts Ever

Wondering about 365? Well, it’s just a number assuming that you published one blog post everyday in the first year. I started Minterest back in 2007 and later in 2011 I had around 365 blog posts that was sending me around 300 unique visits a day. But what’s interesting to me was few evergreen posts were sending most of the traffic. So then I decided to write in-depth content covering almost all aspects of the topic. And in less than 10 months I increased the traffic by 5 times. The search traffic zoomed to 1,500+ visits a day.

Then there was a Google penalty and I decided to clean my archived blog posts. Yes, there were low quality content, thin content, and some duplicate content as well. I deleted every single post that were outdated, news topic, or something that I didn’t like and ended up with just 130 blog posts or so from 500+. Again, even after deletion the traffic was not affected in anyway and it obviously means that all the deleted blog posts were sending nearly zero traffic.
You want to become a good blogger? Then read and write a lot. Yes, A LOTTT. It’s practice that makes us perfect.

My Message To You…

You don’t start a blog to make money. I would say don’t even think about it.
Just focus on writing and writing only.  Because, when you have the content it will naturally attract traffic (though little promotion won’t hurt) and when you have the traffic then there’s a way to monetize it and you can do it any day.

Like Darren Rowse has written,
If you have just one reader and your blog changes their life your blog is big enough.
It’s all about whether you’re giving up or not. If you’re consistently creating high quality content then your website traffic (your income too) and your personal brand will grow naturally over time.

And no, you don’t really need a million visits to make money from your blog. In fact, back in 2007-08 when I had less than 100 visits a day I monetized a niche blog perfectly and was able to generate $1,000s a month in affiliate income.
Happy Blogging!

Propeller Ads Review: Pros & Cons And Everything You Need To Know

Google AdSense is the biggest (and the most popular) ad network with millions of advertisers and publishers. Thanks to Google’s huge AdWords ad inventory.
However, it doesn’t really mean that AdSense is always the best way to monetize your website. There are a dozen other ad networks that are willing to pay a higher CPM for your traffic. Propeller Ads is one of them.
CPM (Cost Per Mille) stands for Cost Per 1,000 Impressions. CPM networks pays for every 1,000 impressions you generate. If a CPM ad network is paying you $1 CPM then it means that they’re paying you $1 for every 1,000 page views you generate.
Over the past one decade I’ve recommended AdSense and only AdSense — on my blog posts, blog comments, email enquiries, and everywhere else. And it was simply because… AdSense has got an ad inventory that’s unmatched by any other ad network. So, I imagined that no other ad network can beat the CPM offered by AdSense.

But the problem is… we can’t predict the AdSense income. As you can see… I’m not longer monetizing the blog with any of those ad networks and the reason is none of them gives guaranteed income (except private ads network like BuySellAds.com).

I used to average around $0.50 per click on AdSense for several years and then it suddenly dropped to $0.05-$0.15 per click for few months and then it started giving over $1 per click. However, it didn’t last for long and I pulled off all sorts of ad networks on the blog and started selling selective private ads only.

Why Propeller Ads

Propeller Ads
Propeller Ads is an ad network based in U.K. that promises 100% of your international traffic and the highest CPM possible. Traffic from the following countries generates the maximum CPM: U.S. & Canada, U.K., and Australia.
Unlike Google AdSense, Propeller Ads is a CPM ad network which basically means that it pays for every 1,000 ad impressions you generate. So it doesn’t matter whether the users are clicking your ads or not — you get paid! And that’s why large publishers prefer CPM networks over CPC ad networks (like AdSense, Bing Ads, etc.).
If your traffic and its quality is stable then CPM ads can generate guaranteed income every day and every month. Have you ever noticed the way some of the high-traffic websites display content as 10-50 slides? Yes, it’s to increase the number of pages views per visit — and eventually the CPM.

Propeller Ads: Types Of Ad Products

Propeller Ads offers you a variety of ad products and that’s one space where Propeller Ads outsmart other ad networks — including Google AdSense. So it doesn’t matter what type of your blog or website you own — there will always be an ad product for you.
But that doesn’t mean that you can send them fake traffic (autosurf, traffic exchanges, etc.) and make a lot of money. It won’t work that way. Obviously.
Here are the different types of ad products offered by Propeller Ads:

1. OnClick PopUnder Ads

OnClick PopUnder Ads is perhaps the most effective ad product by Propeller Ads as it offers the maximum CPM rate (up to $10). It’s because you get paid for each ad impression (it works on mobile devices too!).
According to Propeller Ads, entertainment websites (music, movies, photo, downloads, games, viral content, etc.) gets the best CPM for pop-under ads.

2. Mobile Ads

Propeller Ads offers two types of mobile ads: Mobile Dialog Ads and Mobile Interstitial Ads (apart from the regular mobile banner ads).
Here is what can you expect from a:

Mobile Dialog Ads
Dialog Ads is a kind of an alert that show users as a dialogue box. So it’s almost certain to attract  user’s attention and that should result in higher click-through-rate and thereby CPM.

Mobile Interstitial Ads
Mobile Interstitial Ads is a full screen mobile ad. It’s one of the top performing ad product by Propeller Ads because of its higher user engagement.

3. Classic Banner Ads

Banner ads are still popular as it’s the easiest way to reach out to a massive audience at minimal costs. The best performing banner ads by Propeller Ads are ad units of sizes: 300×250 and 728×90. Other available ad units are: 468×60, 120×600, 160×600, 800×600, 800×440, and 320×50.
You can check out their best practices for banner ads placement here. According to Propeller Ads, entertainment blogs and download sites tends to perform better than other niche.

4. Layer Ads

Layer Ad is a banner ad on steroid as it loads banner ads over the website content. You can choose any of the available banner ad units but a bigger ad unit such as 800×600 or 800×440 is recommended.

5. Slider Ads

Slider Ad is again another kind of banner ad that fades in at the bottom of a web page. Unless the user decides to close, it’s always visible even if he/she is scrolling up or down.

6. Direct Ads

Direct Ads (or Direct Links) is a unique ad product in which publishers are given a URL to promote. You can promote it by creating your own banner ads, text link ads, buttons, or even redirects.
For instance, you can monetize your 404 pages with a direct ad — without hurting user experience. According to Propeller Ads, it works best on a downloads website (ebooks, music, apps, wallpapers, movies, etc.)

7. Video Ads

If you want to monetize your video content then can try Video Ads. Propeller Ads offers three video ad spots: Pre-Roll, Mid-Roll, Post-Roll, and Pre-Game.
Note: All the earning screenshots are collected as part of the research (with majority of them shared by Propeller Ads itself on request). I do not run Propeller Ads on my blog as I prefer selling private ads only. I’ve included as much screenshots as I can — from different industires — so that you can use it as a benchmark to find out whether your earnings are on par with other publishers.

Propeller Ads: Pros & Cons

First things first. Propeller Ads is not exactly an AdSense alternative. Google AdSense is a pay-per-click ad network and Propeller Ads is a CPM ad network. It basically means, AdSense pays for each click-throughs from your website and Propeller Ads pays for every 1,000 ad impressions.

Google AdSense works best when your website is in a competitive niche with majority of traffic from organic search (that is, from search engines). If you have a high traffic website that’s in a non-competitive industry then the AdSense earnings could be terrible (especially when its organic traffic is less).
Again, AdSense is a good choice for file sharing websites, forums, downloads websites where the traffic quality is low but the page views/visits ratio is very high. Luckily Propeller Ads (and similar banner networks) works very well on such websites.

Pros

  • It’s super easy to get started as all accounts are activated instantly. You can login to your publisher account and add all the domain names that you wish to monetize and you will be notified via email when it’s approved.
  • Propeller Ads share 80% of their ad revenue with publishers. But it’s not a good idea to compare two advertisers based only on their revenue sharing percentage as we don’t know the real size of their total ad inventory. An advertiser with a massive ad inventory can easily beat the CPM of a small ad network with just 50% revenue sharing.
  • The reporting of Propeller Ads is pretty simple. It shows your earnings in a tabular way or on a chart. And the best thing? It’s real-time!
  • Propeller Ads supports the following payment methods: Wire Transfer, Payoneer, Webmoney, and Prepaid Cards. The minimum payment amount will be $500 for Wire Transfers and $100 for all other payment methods and is based on a NET 30 terms. That is, if your total earnings at the end of January is $300 then you will be paid in the first week of March.
  • Propeller Ads accepts all websites irrespective of their traffic as long as it doesn’t violate their terms and conditions.
  • It generates the maximum CPM for entertainment websites (including downloads, music, movies, viral blogs, etc.).
  • As a publisher you can refer other publishers to Propeller Ads and can earn 5% of his/her future ad revenue — for lifetime.
  • You can even monetize your 404 pages with a full-screen ad. No more wasted traffic!
  • You can run Propeller Ads along with ads from other advertising or affiliate networks — like AdSense, Infolinks, CJ, etc.
  • If you are a new publisher and is looking for some personal assistance then you get direct one-to-one support via email or Skype. Also, if you have a high traffic website then you get a dedicated account manager who will assist you to optimize the traffic.

Cons

  • Poor user experience. Your visitors may find full-screen ads, pop-under ads, push ads, etc. as annoying.
  • Do not support PayPal payments. It’s really a big turn off because even almost all top AdSense alternatives support PayPal.
  • Once again, the minimum payout is also on the higher side. And I suppose it’s because they do not support PayPal payments.
  • The best performing ad units are not traditional banner ads or mobile ads — it’s pop-under ads and full-page ads. But users (including me) hate it. However, if you have a high traffic file sharing website or a downloads website or a maybe even a forum then pop-under ads could be the right choice.
  • It’s true that Propeller Ads is accepting all sorts of publisher websites (unless of course it doesn’t comply with their terms and conditions) but it appears like if you want to generate handsome income then you need either a high-traffic website or a website with high-quality traffic.
  • If your traffic quality is low (it means you get few traffic from U.S., U.K., and Europe) then Propeller Ads may not be a right choice unless you want to try pop-under ads, full-page ads, etc.
  • Again, Propeller Ads considers conversions as well when calculating CPM. A CPM network is supposed to pay a fixed income for every 1,000 pages views irrespective of conversions. But Propeller Ads offers more payment models to advertisers like — CPC (Cost Per Click) and CPA (Cost Per Action). So your final earnings depends upon the type of ad inventory too.
  • Your CPM could be extremely low if the traffic quality is poor. Of course, AdSense also do not pay much for low quality traffic but at Propeller Ads it’s much more worse. Here’s a screenshot of a popular Spanish tech blog that receives no meaningful traffic from English speaking countries. Its CPM with Google AdSense was around $0.20 but as you can see Propeller Ads’ banner ads are not even generating a CPM of $0.05.
Spanish Tech Blog
Conclusion
Propeller Ads is not another network where you could fake traffic and money. Like AdSense or any other reliable publisher network — you need real traffic to make real income.

Social Media
Social media marketing is an inexpensive yet very powerful tool for content marketing. It helps you build a loyal audience that grows your business. Use this guide to learn what social media marketing is and how you can use it to build a successful business.
Social media marketing is an effective method of generating website traffic through social media sites.
It’s about creating valuable content that catches people’s attention and encourages them to share it with their social connections.
Social media is not new. It has been around for decades. But, the rise of social media sites has seen a tremendous surge over the last 10 years.
Today, social media has become an indispensable part of all serious online marketing campaigns.

What is Social Media Marketing

Social media marketing involves marketing products or services using social media. Unlike traditional marketing, you do not begin with your sales pitch right away. Instead, you build rapport with people before you start selling them anything.
Effective social media marketing focuses on building a community of engaged people who love you, follow you, buy from you, spread the word about your business and ultimately grow your business.
Social media marketing takes time, energy and careful planning. It’s less like running a sprint and more like running a marathon. So before you dive in, prepare yourself for the amount of energy it needs to bring fruitful results.
Let’s have a look at what social media is.

What is Social Media

Social media is a way for people to interact online. They stay in touch with one another using Facebook, Twitter, Google+, LinkedIn and many other social media sites.
Social media is called so because people communicate with one another in a social context using conversations, comments and other means of interactions.
For businesses, social media has turned out to be no less than a magic wand. People today are sharing more information than ever on social media sites, which is helping businesses identify their target audience better and market their products and services effectively.

Is Social Media just a Hype

Social media is not a fad. In fact, it is extremely valuable.
Over the last 10 years, the Web has seen a tremendous growth in the development and popularity of social media sites. Millions of people get online and interact with one another using social media every day!
The stats (as of October, 2014) below clearly show some social media muscles.
  • A whopping 93% of shopping decisions made by people are influenced by social media
  • About 92% of consumers trust peer recommendations
  • 89% of 18-29 year olds are on a social network
  • Facebook has over 1.32 billion monthly active users
  • Over 9 billion photos are uploaded to Facebook each month
  • 1 in 5 young adults (18-24) uses Twitter everyday
  • Twitter has over 271 million monthly active users
  • Google+ sees more than 540 million active users each month
  • Every second 2 new members join LinkedIn
  • A total of 67% bloggers operate more than one blog
  • Women (18-29) are the power users of the Web
  • Women check out a brand page more often than men
  • YouTube serves more than 1 billion unique visitors every month
You cannot ignore the power of social media, especially if you are serious about running a successful business online.

Does your Company need Social Media

Yes, it does. Regardless of how small or large your company is, social media can help you grow your business because your customers are online.
They are looking for information and recommendations. They are interacting with their friends, colleagues, experts and other brands to obtain enough information to make the right choice.
Why?
Well, because they want to be smart buyers.
And you can help them become smart buyers by listening to them. Answer their questions. Provide them the information they are looking for and you can pretty much attract them to your site.

Top Social Media Platforms

People today hang out on a variety of social media platforms. Knowing the best places to promote your business is the first step towards getting remarkable results. Take a look at the top social media platform below to know what makes each platform special.
Facebook
With over 1.32 billion monthly active users, Facebook has become the world’s largest social network. If you are not on Facebook, you are missing a lot, especially if you own a business.
10 years ago when Facebook made its debut in 2004, it was a no-frills network allowing college students to connect with one another.
Today, billions of people are using Facebook to connect with friends and the world around them, and businesses are using it to build a closer relationship with their audience and customers.

Twitter
Twitter is great for sharing announcements, events and promotions. With 271 million+ monthly active users and 500 million+ tweets sent per day, Twitter is a perfect platform for generating brand awareness.
Back in the year 2006, Twitter made its debut as a service that let users send short (up to 140 characters long) messages to a group of people. Its intended use was to keep friends and colleagues informed about their daily activities.
Little did everyone know that Twitter would transform into a powerful tool for online marketing one day.

For new social media marketers, we have written a guide called The Beginner’s Guide to Marketing with Twitter. Check it out.

Google+
With over 540 million monthly active users and the fact that Google favours Google+ pages in search results, it would be silly not to use Google+ to connect with your prospects and customers.
When it made its first appearance back in 2011, SEO experts were the first ones to use it. People believed that Google+ was basically a technical platform meant to be used by techies and men alone.
Today, Google+ has more than 1.6 billion total users including an impressive ratio of men and women.

LinkedIn
Every second two new members join LinkedIn. Google generally reports LinkedIn company pages within the top 1-2 pages of search results. Fortune 500 and Fortune 100 companies are on LinkedIn. The time is just right to take your business to LinkedIn.
It is a great platform for generating B2B leads.
People as colleagues use LinkedIn to stay connected with one another and businesses use it to connect with current and potential stakeholders and employees.

Pinterest
Pinterest has attracted 70 million+ users in less than 4 years. Approx. 80% of these users are women. Moreover, the world’s top brands are on Pinterest. There is no reason why you should underestimate Pinterest as a powerful social media marketing tool.
The fact that one of five people on Pinterest has purchased something they have seen on the site makes Pinterest an ideal place for promoting your products or services.
If your business can benefit from image sharing and storytelling, Pinterest is for you.

Which Social Media Platform is Best for You

The one your customers hang out on.
Identify your main business objectives and target customer demographics and you can find the right social network for you.
Here are two examples to simplify the process.
Example 1: If your business objective is to increase sales for beauty products for women, your target customer demographics may include women between the age of 18 and 40. As you are going to focus on women alone, choosing Pinterest is the best choice as over 80% of Pinterest users are women.
Example 2: If your business objective is to deliver topic-based news or timely insights, your target customer demographics may include information-hungry people who remain online throughout most of their lives. Twitter is an ideal choice for you as it lets you respond to and engage with your followers.
Need a shortcut? Turn to Facebook. Why? With over 1.32 billion monthly active users and with an almost equal ratio of men and women as users, Facebook is ideal for just about any business.
YouTube
YouTube marketing campaigns provide remarkable results, and the success stories of Old Spice, Zappos, Dove and Lay’s prove it. Over 6 billion hours of video is watched every month on YouTube. Chances are your customers are watching YouTube videos. Amaze them today.
YouTube has become the top source of video entertainment on the Web. Users are watching and sharing YouTube videos at an unbelievable speed.

Blogging
An effective blog can drive torrents of traffic to your main website. People love to read blogs because blogs have an informal, conversational style. A blog is a powerful tool for building brand awareness and boosting sales.
The best part is that you don’t need to be a techie to start and run a blog.
There are many different blogging platforms available including WordPress, Blogger, Tumblr, Typepad, Quora and many more.
Not only are these blogging platforms easy to use but also contain a lot of help and support material which can turn you into an ace blogger if you devote enough time regularly.

That’s not all Folks!
The social networking sites discussed here are not the only places for people to interact and businesses to connect with consumers and prospects.
Besides these social networks, there are:
  • Forums
Perhaps the oldest form of social media, Forums are pretty effective at building communities and providing timely information. When run effectively, Forums can turn out to be a reliable source of traffic.
  • Social bookmarking services
Social bookmarks are identical to the bookmarks you have stored on your computer for your favourite sites. The only difference is that social bookmarks are publically visible. StumbleUpon, Delicious, Kaboodle and ThisNext are some popular social bookmarking services.
  • Social news services
These services allow you to build peer-based lists of recommended articles from across the Internet. Users often vote on the value of postings. Digg and Reddit are the two most popular social news services.
  • Question and answer based social networks
People often turn to question and answer based social networks when they need quick answers for their issues. This is an ideal place to connect with people and make them aware of what you do. Quora and Yahoo Answers are two such networks that are very popular.
  • Picture sharing services
These services let you tell your story through pictures and short videos. Instagram is one such service. There are more than 200 million Instagram users who contribute towards posting more than 55 million photos every day. Although it’s Facebook’s baby now but you can’t ignore its potential.
Social Media Marketing Best Practices
Social media is all about building and engaging a community. Yes, it is a perfect platform for rolling out promotional updates but that should not be the first and only thing on your agenda.
Effective social media marketing demands that you do not rush towards closing a sale.
Focus on building relationships with your audience. Keep them delighted and they will start loving your brand.

Pros and Cons of Using Social Media
Social media is simple, useful and very effective. But at the same time, it has some drawbacks that you can’t ignore.
Pros:
  • Lets you quickly reach your target audience
  • Makes branding simple and effective
  • Helps build relationships with your audience
  • Improves search engine rankings

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

Search Engine Optimization (SEO)
SEO, or Search Engine Optimization, is the practice of telling search engines such as Google what your website is about and how it may be useful for users. If done well, it gets you closer to the top on the result page displayed by a search engine, and you get high volumes of traffic for your website.

Why is SEO important

When people need some information, they mostly search for it online on Google, Yahoo!, Bing or other search engines. These search engines maintain huge databases of websites and based on people’s queries they display a set of results, showing websites that match with the search criteria in a certain order so that people could quickly and accurately get what they’re looking for and .
Without SEO, neither search engines nor people will come to know about your website. You may have one of the best websites out there about your niche but if people don’t know about it, they will never visit it and you will never be able to make some serious money with it.

SEO Overview

Search engine optimization is all about getting traffic from a search engine. It is a method of systematically structuring each page on your website so that search engines will find them useful and direct users towards it. Along with pay per click (PPC) advertising, SEO is the most widely used method of brining people to a website.
There are many aspects of SEO.
  • On-page SEO
On-page SEO involves formatting each page on your website in such a way that it becomes easy for search engines to crawl and store it in their databases.Basically, you need to place keywords related to your niche on a webpage at strategic locations. Keywords are words and phrases used by people when they search for something on a search engine. Examples of keywords include “how to make money online”, “SEO guide for affiliates”, “affiliate marketing”, etc.
  • Off-page SEO
Off-page SEO involves doing activities off your website that improve your search engine rankings. It is equally important and if you ignore it, you would not get desired results.Off-page SEO involves promoting your website by linking it to other important websites. When a website links to your website, it provides you a “backlink” which improves your site’s worth. Social networking websites, blogs, blog marketing, forum marketing, directory submission, search engine submission, social bookmarking, link baiting and article submission are some effective methods of promoting your website.
When implemented successfully, SEO will help your website outrank all other websites and boost the traffic that you receive from a search engine.

How Search Engine Optimization Works for You

SEO is by far the best method of obtaining free traffic from a search engine. When people search for something they are typically served with two sets of results, paid and free.
To secure a spot in the paid results, you need to spend money. However, to appear in the free or organic results, you do not need to spend money. A search engine considers these results the most relevant for the search term and displays them automatically.
In order to get free traffic from a search engine, you should not only appear in the free results but also appear in the first three pages of the results because users do not bother to check beyond these pages. Therefore, you must optimize your website pages effectively, covering your most important keywords.
SEO helps you appear closer to the top on a search engine results page (SERP). If you can achieve top spots for your most important keywords, nobody can stop you from making money as an affiliate. Obtaining high rankings on a results page gets you more traffic, which in turn gets you more money!
However, you must remember that there is no magic wand that can get you high rankings on a search engine. Rather, you need to work hard and smart to raise yourself up the rankings. You need to structure and format each and every page on your website to make a search engine believe it is important and will be useful for a user. Only then, you will be able to get high rankings.

The Good and Bad of SEO

The Good and Bad of SEO
SEO is a blessing as it offers unbeatable benefits over other methods of getting website traffic. However, there are some inevitable disadvantages as well that are hard to ignore.
Good points include:
  • SEO provides free traffic. You do not need to spend money to get visitors from a search engine.
  • The size of your wallet does not matter when it comes to drive traffic to your website. It all boils down to your skills and ability.
  • You get “low-risk” traffic with SEO. Unlike PPC, you do not spend money to get traffic therefore you can ignore it if it does not start getting you results right away. With PPC, you are always concerned about conversions as you spend a lot of money buying traffic. With SEO, such pressurizing situations rarely occur.
Bad points include:
  • SEO takes time and effort, sometimes a lot of time and effort. Most people turn to other methods of getting website traffic simply because of the time and effort it takes to obtain a reputable ranking in search results.
  • Rankings are not permanent. People behind search engines do their best to improve user experience. They regularly update their algorithms, which can affect your rankings without prior notices.

How do you SEO

Search engine optimization is a comprehensive yet simple process. It is twofold; you need to perform on-page SEO as well as off-page SEO.
On-page SEO Tips
On-page SEO involves making certain changes to the content on your website so that Google or any other search engine finds it worth displaying among the top search results.
The on-page tips listed below will help you make the right start.
  • Create high quality, interesting, useful and original content for your website. Search engines and people alike love such content. When people love to read your content, they will keep coming back to your site. By the way, people also love to share such content.
  • Place your keywords strategically. Scatter them throughout your webpage. Do not forget to include your keyword in the first 50 words of your page. Most search engines focus on the top part of a webpage while crawling it so you must include your keyword in the first part of your page.
  • Keep your keyword density between 1% and 4%. That roughly equals using a keyword once every 100 words. There are special tools that can help you determine the exact keyword density. Search engines can block your listing if you over optimize by keeping keyword density very high.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing. Some people try to group keywords close together in an attempt to trick search engines into increasing their website rankings. Search engines hate such practices, and the penalties often involve filtering your search listing. The key to success is using your keywords strategically throughout your webpage.
  • Optimize the title tag for each webpage effectively because this text appears as the clickable heading for your search engine listing. It should clearly describe the topic of your webpage. You should also include your target keyword in the title as it will tell users that it contains the exact information they are looking for.
  • Use your target keyword in inline hyperlinks. Instead of creating “click here” links, be more specific. If, for example, you have a page that covers “making money online”, ideally the link text should be something like “How to Make Money Online”. This improves readability besides giving search engines an idea of where a link is leading.
  • Use the H1 tags for headings on your webpage. Doing so makes each section stand out. It also makes your content easy to scan and read. Search engines love it. Besides, people love to share such content.
Off-page SEO Efforts
Off-page SEO involves doing activities off your website that improve your ranking. It is equally important and if you ignore it, you would not get desired results. Here are some tips to help you do off-page search engine optimization effectively.
  • Promote your website through social networking Create profiles on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, etc. and connect with people to improve the reputation of your website. If possible, dedicate separate professionals for the profile on each social networking site.
  • Blogging is another great way to promote your website. People love to read blogs online. By creating a blog for your website, you give people a reason for coming back to your website. To run a successful blog, you should write compelling and interesting content for your blog. If your blog is impressive, it will also promote people to link to it.
  • Market your website in online forums. Join a forum that is related to your niche and then start interacting with people. Don’t forget to leave a link back to your website in your posting whenever you get a chance. Forums are a great way to direct traffic to your website.
  • Leverage the power of link baiting. Have other good quality sites link to your site. When a website links to your website, it provides you a “backlink” which improves your site’s worth. Social networking websites, blogs, blog marketing, forum marketing, directory submission, search engine submission, social bookmarking, article submission are some effective methods of getting promoting your website.
  • Submit your website to search engines. It is true that search engines keep crawling the Web for new websites, and eventually they will discover your website. However, it may take time. The smart way out is submitting your website to search engines like Google, Yahoo!, Bing, etc.
  • Submit your website to directories. Contrary to popular belief, directories are not dead, and so is directory submission. People still use them. Search engines refer to them for a lot of information. Again, the rule of thumb is to submit your website to niche directories i.e. the directories related to your website.
  • Improve your website traffic with social bookmarking. The good news is that you do not need to spend money to bookmark. Digg, StumbleUpon, Reddit, Delicious and many other social bookmarking websites let you publish your bookmarks free of cost.
  • Go for article submission, it is worth the effort. People read articles when they are looking for expert advice on some topic. By submitting articles related to your niche to article directory sites like EZine, Go Articles, etc., you could drive traffic to your website that will improve its rankings.
  • Answer people’s questions. People are asking questions more than ever. The “how to” queries are increasingly becoming popular these days. When people ask questions, they are looking for expert advice without spending time. Answer people’s questions and leave a link back to your website in your answer. That way you will get links from a top website.

To Cut the Long Story Short

SEO is amazing. It is simple. It is effective. Above all, it is free.
  • Search engines could deliver high volumes of traffic to your website.
  • Traffic obtained through search engines is 100% free traffic.
  • To receive any significant traffic from a search engine, you must appear in the first three pages of the results.
  • You must make effective use of on-page and off-page SEO.
Despite its drawbacks, SEO is still the most widely used method of boosting website traffic. Affiliates around the world harness the power of search engine optimization to improve the rankings of their websites. It’s your turn now!

How to Show Google Ads on Mobile Version of Blogger Blog

If you were searching the way about how to show Google Ads on Mobile version of Blogger blog, then I am sure your current Blogger blog is now showing Google Adsense ads on the mobile version. If this is so, the bad news is, you are missing a lot of revenue from your blog. Because around 40-50% of your visitors are from Mobile operating system like Android, iOS or Symbian etc. So, if you are not showing ads for your mobile version of Blogger blog, you are actually losing money and blog revenue just for a simple mistake.
Show_Google_Ads_On_Mobile_Version_Blogger_BlogThis is a good advantage for the bloggers to have a mobile site by default from Blogger. But you will have to check on a mobile device whether your site is showing mobile ads or not. I am mentioning the word, CHECK because for some cases, you automatically show Google ads on your mobile version of the site. But after checking if you have found, your mobile version of Blogger blog is not showing mobile ads, you can follow the below simple steps to show ads on your mobile blog. Though you will not be able to show 5 ad units on your mobile version of blogger blog, but you will be able to show one small banner and a large rectangle on the mobile version (which works really good for a mobile webpage).

Trick to Show Google Ads on Mobile Version of Blogger Blog:

If the Google Adsense ads are not showing in the mobile version of your blogger blog, this means “Your Google Adsense Account is not connected to your Blogger dashboard”. Some people has already got the trick! But for the newbie bloggers, I want to explain a bit more.
  • Sometimes, Adsense got disable for the default email address of your blogger blog. So, you apply with another email address and copy the Ad code and insert it in your blogger blog and your ad starts showing in your blogger blog.
  • Also, after getting approved by Google adsense if you copy the code and insert it in your blog, you can also face this problem.
If the above two are your cases, then
  1. Go to your blogger Dashboard and change the earning setting.
  2. What to change? Dashboard >> Earning  and now enable Show ads on blog. That’s it! Now save the setting and you will start showing ads on your mobile version of blogger blog.
Show_Google_Ads_On_Mobile_Version_Blogger3. If your Google Adsense is not associated with your Blogger account, Click on “Switch Adsense account” follow the steps. Then enable “Show ads on blog”, you are all done!
My blogger blogs were also not showing Ads in the mobile version. So, I tried to search the reason and found under my Earning tab, “Show ads on blog” was not enabled as I had copied all the codes from Adsense setting and inserted in my blog. Now, I have enable Show ads on blog and all my blogger blogs are showing ads and I can see the difference in earning significantly.
Note: Those who already have Google Adsense on their blog, after enabling the “Show ads on blog”, two more medium rectangle ads will start showing on your right sidebar and below the post (Which are default setting from Google). If you already have 3 big units in your blog, please remove those ads. The ad below post title can be disable from Layout>> Blog Post and then click on edit button. After clicking on edit button you will see option to disable that ad.
Hope the above tips will work for you and will increase your ad revenue. If you still face any problem, you can contact me or leave a comment. I reply quickly to the comments. You can share the trick with your friends also.
