As a follow-up to my post on freelance writing jobs for beginners,
I wanted to share some options for those with more experience under
their belts. The following freelance writing gigs may require a degree,
technical knowledge or simply strong grammar skills and understanding of
the unique demands of online content. Many of these pay upwards of $50
per article. In some cases, they are salary positions. All have an
ongoing need for freelance writers.
Webster Tech Writers
– This site posts gigs for advanced technical writers in a variety of
fields. Degree often required. In some cases, writers need to be local.
The Dollar Stretcher – Topics are saving money and time. Writers are compensated $0.10 per word.
Universal Class
– Instructional writers are paid 4 – 7 cents per word. The current need
is instruction videos. These video courses are 7-12 videos, 8-12
minutes in length. Awarded projects average $3,000 – $10,000.
Pro Blog Design
– Writers are paid $70 – $125 for in-depth tutorials and
discussion-based blog posts. Topics include WordPress, web design,
usability, etc.
About.com –
Payment information will be provided in a Non-Disclosure Agreement. This
is an opportunity worth pursuing and does come with high-profile
publishing opportunities to the Guide. Numerous niche topics are
available based on your expertise. Please be aware there are two
opportunities: Guides and Topic Writers. Guides is the more lucrative of
the two.
World Start – This website provides tech tips. Pay is approximately $0.10 per word.
TCBSolutions.net
– This company is seeking resume writers. Pay is per resume with
consultants averaging around $52,000 annually. Experience required.
Scripted –
Word on the street is Scripted writers are paid $49 (blog post) – $299
(white paper). You will need to pass two tests as part of your
application process and will be notified as work becomes available.
Metro Parent – This parenting site pays $150 – $350 per feature article (1,000 – 2,500 words).

How do bloggers make money from their blogs?
As an update to this post I’ve more recently written one on How I make Money Blogging
which highlights the most profitable ways that I use blogs to generate
income.
I’ve
been reflecting this week about the amazing diversity of opportunities
that are opening up for bloggers to make money from blogging.
I’ve long advised that bloggers seeking to make money from blogging spread their interests across multiple revenue streams so as not to put all their eggs in one basket.
The wonderful thing is that this is becoming easier and easier to do 2005 has seen many options opening up. I thought I’d take a look at some of the methods that bloggers are currently using to make money through blogs.
RSS Advertising – The past 12 months have seen some advances in RSS Advertising also. I’m yet to hear of any bloggers making big money blogging through it to this point – but as improvements are made to the ad programs exploring this I’m sure we’ll start to see examples of it being profitable.
Sponsorship – In addition to the array of advertising programs that are available to join there is a growing awareness in the business of the value and opportunity that exists for them to advertise directly on blogs. I’m hearing more and more examples of this and have been fortunately to have a couple of ad campaigns of my own in the past month –
one with Adobe a couple of weeks ago and another just completed with Ricoh for a new digicam over at my Digital Camera Blog. These are not isolated cases – as I say I know of many blogs exploring sponsorship with advertisers at present and suspect we’ll see more of it in the year ahead. Sponsorship is also happening on a post by post basis with some bloggers being paid to write on certain topics by companies – either in one off or a regular fashion – and they are able to make big money from their blogs doing so.
Affiliate Programs – There are larger affiliate programs like Amazon, Linkshare, Clickbank and Commission Junction but also literally thousands of others from the large to the very small.
Digital Assets – Increasing numbers of bloggers have been developing other digital assets to support and add revenue streams to their blogs. By this I mean that I’m increasingly seeing e-books, courses and tele-seminars being run by bloggers. This type of activity will only increase in future – in fact this week I’ve seen numerous examples of bloggers running courses.
Blog Network Opportunities – with the rise in popularity of Blog Networks – bloggers are also being presented with more places to earn an income from their blogging – by writing for and with others. While it might be difficult to get a writing gig with one of the bigger networks – there are plenty who are always asking for new bloggers to join and who are willing to pay bloggers using a variety of payment models. While there are distinct advantages of blogging for yourself – blogging for an established network who will handle a lot of the set up/promotion/admin/SEO etc has it’s advantages also. More and more bloggers are combining writing for themselves on their own blogs with taking on blog network blogs as additional income streams.
Business Blog Writing Opportunities – as blogging has risen in it’s profile as a medium more and more businesses are starting blogs. Many of these companies have internal staff take on blogging duties – but an increasing number of them are hiring specialist bloggers to come on and run their blogs. I know of a number of bloggers who in the past month or two have been approached for such paid work.
Non Blogging Writing Opportunities – Also becoming more common are bloggers being hired to write in non blogging mediums. Manolo’s recent coup of a column in the Washington Post is just one example of this as bloggers are increasingly being approached to write for newspapers, magazines and other non blog websites. Along side this is the rise of bloggers as published book authors – this is to the extent that one blogger I spoke with this week complained to me that they were one of the few bloggers than they knew who didn’t have a book deal!
Donations – Tip Jars and donation buttons have been a part of blogging for years now but this last year saw a number of bloggers go full time after fund raising drives. Perhaps the most high profile of these was Jason Kottke of kottke.org who through the generosity of his readership was able to quit his job and become a full time blogger.
Flipping Blogs – Also more common in 2005 was the practice of ‘Blog Flipping’ – or selling of blogs. This has happened both on an individual blog level (I can think of about 20 blogs that sold this year) but also on a network level (the most obvious of these being the 8 figure sale of Weblogs Inc to AOL).
Merchandising – My recent attempt to sell ProBlogger.net T-shirts wasn’t a raging success, but it is an example of how an increasing number of bloggers are attempting to make a few extra dollars from their blogs by selling branded products through programs like Cafepress. While I didn’t have a lot of success with merchandising – quite a few larger blogs are seeing significant sales – especially blogs with a cult following. I’m not at liberty to discuss details – but I know of one largish blog which will see sales over $20,000 in merchandise for the calendar year of 2005.
Consulting and Speaking – While it has been popular for established consultants to add blogs to their businesses we’re also starting to see bloggers with no consulting background able to make money by charging readers for their time in consulting scenarios BECAUSE of the profile that their blogs have built them. Blogging has the ability to establish people as experts on niche topics and we all know the value of being perceived as an expert. I spoke to one blogger last month who charges himself out at over $200 an hour for speaking and consulting work – his area of expertise was something that he knew little about 18 months ago – but through his blog he’s become a leader in his field and a minor celebrity in his industry.
As time rolls on there are more and more ways that bloggers make money from their blogs opening up. Feel free to suggest your own ideas and experiences in comments below.

I’ve included as much screenshots as I can — from different industires — so that you can use it as a benchmark to find out whether your earnings are on par with other publishers.
Google
AdSense works best when your website is in a competitive niche with
majority of traffic from organic search (that is, from search engines).
If you have a high traffic website that’s in a non-competitive industry

- Once again, the minimum payout is also on the higher side. And I suppose it’s because they do not support PayPal payments.
- The best performing ad units are not traditional banner ads or mobile ads — it’s pop-under ads and full-page ads. But users (including me) hate it. However, if you have a high traffic file sharing website or a downloads website or a maybe even a forum then pop-under ads could be the right choice.
- It’s true that Propeller Ads is accepting all sorts of publisher websites (unless of course it doesn’t comply with their terms and conditions) but it appears like if you want to generate handsome income then you need either a high-traffic website or a website with high-quality traffic.
- If your traffic quality is low (it means you get few traffic from U.S., U.K., and Europe) then Propeller Ads may not be a right choice unless you want to try pop-under ads, full-page ads, etc.
- Again, Propeller Ads considers conversions as well when calculating CPM. A CPM network is supposed to pay a fixed income for every 1,000 pages views irrespective of conversions. But Propeller Ads offers more payment models to advertisers like — CPC (Cost Per Click) and CPA (Cost Per Action). So your final earnings depends upon the type of ad inventory too.
- Your CPM could be extremely low if the traffic quality is poor. Of course, AdSense also do not pay much for low quality traffic but at Propeller Ads it’s much more worse. Here’s a screenshot of a popular Spanish tech blog that receives no meaningful traffic from English speaking countries. Its CPM with Google AdSense was around $0.20 but as you can see Propeller Ads’ banner ads are not even generating a CPM of $0.05.
Conclusion
Propeller Ads is not another network where you could fake traffic and money. Like AdSense or any other reliable publisher network — you need real traffic to make real income.How Much Traffic Do You Need To Make Money With AdSense?
Let’s say you want to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense and/or Google AdSense alternatives.
$100,000 divided by 365 = $274 a day.
So,
you have to create either: 274 pages that earn $1 a day OR 548 pages
that earn 50 cents a day OR 1,096 pages that earn 25 cents a day (which
sounds reasonable, right?). Let’s say you have 1,096 high quality blog
posts and you earn $0.25 per click from AdSense.
I have analyzed the traffic and AdSense stats (using Google Image Search) of several websites including my own blogs and websites.
From my analysis, I found that the average Page CTR is
around 1% (or it’s something that we can achieve easily). But it really
depends upon your niche, web site design and other factors.
In fact I have achieved a Page CTR of over 20% in 2007 for a niche website and was making $100+ a day from Google AdSense alone.
Let’s Do The Math To Make $100,000 A Year With Google AdSense
Let’s assume that you have a Page CTR of 1% and your average CPC is $0.25 (I believe it’s quite an achievable target unless your keywords have no advertiser competition – e.g. a recipe blog).
Some
of the top paying AdSense niches are Finance, Internet Marketing,
Technology, Web Hosting, Internet & Computers, Software, Health etc.
and some of the lowest paying AdSense niches are Entertainment, Arts,
Movies, Celebrity Gossips, News blog, Jokes, Wallpapers, Quotes,
Recipes, Photo blogs etc.
As mentioned
earlier $100,000 a year means you have to earn $274 a day. If your
average CPC is $0.25 then you need 100,000/0.25 = 400,000 clicks a year
(or approximately 1,000 clicks a day) to earn $100,000 a year from
Google AdSense. Assuming that your Page CTR is 1% you need approximately
100,000 page views a day. Now, let’s say your “Bounce Rate” (it is the estimated percentage of visits to your website that consist of a single page view) is 100%. It means that you need 100,000 unique visitors a day itself to generate 100,000 page views a day.
In a nutshell, you need 100,000 visitors a day to make $100,000 a year from Google AdSense alone (with a CTR of 1% and CPC of $0.25).

But
you are not using AdSense alone to monetize your website, right? You
can make more money by selling direct banner ads, in-text ads, CPM ads,
sponsored links, affiliate marketing, etc.
Cost Per Impression (CPM) Ads
So
let’s say you’re selling direct banner ads and is also selling CPM
advertising which is again an effective way to monetize your website.
What are CPM ads?CPM (Cost Per Mille) stands for Cost Per 1,000 Impressions. CPM networks pays for every 1,000 impressions you generate. If a CPM ad network is paying you $1 CPM then it means that they’re paying you $1 for every 1,000 page views you generate.
CPM
Network earnings totally depend upon your traffic quality but you can
expect anywhere between $1 – $3 per 1,000 impressions. So, if you
generate 100,000 page views a day then you can make $100 – $300 a day
from CPM Networks. Again, you can earn $100 – $300 (or maybe even more) a
day by selling banner ads directly to advertisers.
Now,
you can split the traffic into three as you’re earning $300 each from 3
advertising networks. It means that you need 100,000/3=33,333 unique
visitors a day (with a bounce rate of 100%) to make approximately
$274/day.
Again, if you have an authority blog
then your bounce rate will never be 100%. In that case you can expect an
average page view of 1.5 per user. It means that 50% of your visitors
exit from the landing page and others visit more than one page on your
website.
All in all, you need approximately 20,000
visitors a day to generate 30,000+ page views and it can earn $274 a
day which translates to $100,000 a year in advertising revenues. Need a
little more help reaching that $100,000/year goal? Add commissions from Affiliate Programs as well into the equation and you can hit that $100,000 goal with much less traffic. In fact, in 2008 I was averaging $200+ a day from less than 200 daily unique visitors with affiliate marketing. It was possible because when it comes to affiliate marketing it’s all about traffic quality and not traffic quantity.
How To Optimize Google AdSense
You
can optimize your AdSense ads in several ways. For example, you can try
text ads only, image ads only, text & image ads to find out which
ad format is performing better. Google recommends wide ad formats like
728 x 90, 336 x 280, 300 x 250, and 160 x 600 as they’re more advertiser
friendly.
When you use the recommended ad
formats, your AdSense ads should perform well because of increased
competition. How? The recommended ad formats by AdSense are the most
popular ad formats and hence almost all advertisers must be targeting
those ad formats. So it increases the competition naturally and Google
will be showing the highest paying ads on your website.
But it’s also a good idea to try different ad formats as Google is now offering a variety of ad formats (including responsive ad units). I would recommend A/B testing
on your website to find out the best performing ad formats. Like, you
can do A/B testing by trying different ad types, ad formats, ad colors,
and then by placing your ads at different sections on your website
(above and below the fold) to find out which position is offering the
best CTR).
But what if your AdSense earnings are low even though you have good a CTR? In that case, I would recommend ad controls though Google mentioned that blocking any ad will reduce our potential earnings.
Google says:
It’s a myth that filtering ads can prevent ‘low-paying ads’ from appearing, so as always, we recommend blocking only those ads that you feel are unsuitable for your users.
Finally, you can tweak the AdSense click-through-rate by using an AdSense friendly template for your website/blog. But make sure that your website is not ad heavy as it will impact the user experience in a negative way. And as always, you can focus on creating awesome content and driving more traffic so that it increases your Google AdSense earnings (and your advertising revenues) naturally.
